Meet Louise Nelson

Stories inspired by curiosity, courage, and a few hundred chickens.

Hello, and welcome! I’m Jody Calkins, and I write funny, heartfelt middle-grade fiction under the name Louise Nelson.

My stories are written for curious readers ages 8–12 who enjoy friendship, family, unexpected challenges, and ordinary kids discovering they’re capable of extraordinary things.

My writing journey began when I was eleven years old and saw my older sister creating stories and character profiles. I was at the perfect age to copy everything she did—because that’s what little sisters do. She unknowingly inspired me to begin writing, and I’ve been telling stories ever since.

I grew up among the woods and lakes of Minnesota and now live in rural Alaska with my husband. Those early years spent exploring outdoors helped nurture the curiosity and imagination that still find their way into my stories.

My husband and I also owned a small chicken farm in Colorado, where we cared for approximately five hundred chickens. That experience inspired Chickens, Girls, & Other Life Problems—and gave me more than enough chicken-related mishaps to draw from!

I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in classical studies and literature from the University of Colorado Boulder and am a graduate of the Institute of Children’s Literature’s creative writing program for children and teenagers.

Whether a story begins on a chicken farm, with a little fairy dust, or beneath an approaching storm, I hope young readers finish it feeling entertained, encouraged, and ready for their next adventure.
